Securing the “Ghost in the Machine”: IoT and Network Integrity

Your home is likely filled with smart devices, fridges, lightbulbs, cameras, and thermostats. These Internet of Things (IoT) devices are notorious for poor security. A compromised smart bulb can provide a “backdoor” into your home network, allowing hackers to move laterally toward your laptop or phone.

Strategic Defence:

  • Network Segregation: Most modern routers allow you to create a “Guest Network.” Put all your smart home devices on this separate channel. This ensures that if your smart fridge is hacked, the attacker cannot access the computer you use for banking.
  • Disable UPnP: Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) allows devices to discover each other easily, but it’s a massive security hole. Turn it off in your router settings.
  • Encryption Standards: Ensure your Wi-Fi is using at least WPA3 encryption.
